Managed Switches

I have always used a simple Red Lion N-Tron un-managed switch for my PLC controls application (ie: 108TX).  recently i have been trying to understand if there are any advantages in going with the more expensive managed switches.  I understand that the managed switches give you more control over ports and subnet access.  However, I have not had a problem with the un-managed switches so far.  Could anyone give me recommendations or offer more specific examples of what could go wrong when using an un-managed switch from the industrial controls perspective?  I have attached a picture of my simple controls topology for the purpose of discussion.  Thanks.

RsLogix 500 Security Violation

Hi,

I have AB SLC05/5 PLC controlling Metso Filter Press with Citect SCADA version 6.10. I now have a problem where several graphics on the main graphics page are missing, thus preventing Control Room Operators running the equipment (Filter Press). I have to restore the missing graphics to have the equipment back running.

I connected my laptop PC on which RsLogix 500 is installed, and verified Ethernet communication between the PLC and the laptop from RSLINX Lite. However, when attempting to verify communication on the RsLogix 500 under Communication Tab, I have this message popping up: "RsLogix 500 Security Violation. 'You are not authorised to perform this operation(Communications Configuration).'"

When attempting to go On-Line, this message is also popping up: "The current security connection is no longer valid."

This is preventing me from going On-line to clear the faults and restore the missing graphics. I am just wondering if one of my workmates who had worked on it earlier - who is not familiar with AB PLC - had done someting silly and is hidding it from me.

Can anyone please help me resolve my issue.

Thank you so much for your help.

I think I am Brain Dead today, or it has just been too long since I've played with RIO. I am using a Control Logix 1756-DHRIO Ser. B going to a 1794-ASB Ser. C In the Tree, the 1756-DHRIO is fine. The 1794-ASB shows IO Faulted, Module Fault Code 16#0312 Connection Request Error: Invalid Link Address. I have the "Blue Hose" with 150 Ohm Resistor on each end with a total Length of 10 feet. Both Channel A and B are setup for RIO on the 1756-DHRIO Channel A is addressed as "01" and Channel B is "02" Status Window states "A IO SCAN, A OK, B IO SCAN, OFF LINE" (B is not connected / not being used) Channel A Light is Flashing Red Channel B Light is Off Power LED is On Green 1794-ASB Switch 1, 1=on, 2=on, 3=on, 4=on, 5=on, 6=on, 7=on, 8=on Switch 2, 1=on, 2=on, 3=on, 4=on, 5=on, 6=on, 7=off, 8=on I/O Rack number should be 0 First I/O Group should be 0 Baud should be 57.6k All LEDs are off, they turn on temporarily on power up. There is one 1794-TB3 connected with a 1794-IB8S I just can't seem to figure out what I am missing. Attached is the RSLogix 5000 file as well. test.ACD

New to PLC's

Hello,

I am sorry I am sure this has been asked before but I did some searching and didn't find much. I have no experience with PLC's and my manager has suggested I take some classes to fill a void in our team's skill set.  We use Allen Bradley PLC's and have a seat of RSlogix5000.  I hope to learn how to modify existing programs for some of our test equipment.  I want to add sensors to some existing test equipment and record data generated by these sensors.  My question for this group is If you were just getting started and you had a budget for a week of training what classes would you take? Where would you take them?  My manger and I realize a week of training may barely scratch the surface.  Is Allen Bradley's training worth the time and money for travel?  Is there local 3rd party training I can find in the Cleveland area that teaches RSlogix5000?

I am thinking about the below courses.

CCP146 Conrtol Logix 5000 System Fundementals

and CCP 151 Basic Ladder logic

http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/pp/gmst10-pp189_-en-e.pdf

Also what is the difference between RSlogix 5000 and RSlogix 500?

Micro820 to External RS-232 Display

Hello,

I am working on a project to connect a PLC (Micro820 by Allen Bradley) to a simple RS-232 alphanumeric OLED display. I am not too familiar with structured text language, but I have worked with micro-controllers that use similar high-level languages (mostly C-based).

My question is: is it possible to use connected components workbench to program my Micro820 to output ASCII commands to an off-the-shelf RS-232 alphanumeric display? Are there libraries that make life easier to do this?

I welcome any recommendations to related reference material or command tutorials, thanks!

Kinetix 300 fault

I have a Kinetix 300 drive that keeps giving me a E74 fault. I have checked the following and have found nothing. Last summer we had similar problem but not as bad. I opened the panel door and put a fan blowing on the drive stills trips. This drive runs a short, simple belt conveyor, have not found a bad bearing or anything. Any ideas for some of you would be appreciated.

E74 Drive has exceeded peak current limit. Drive cannot regulate current properly.
Motor cables shorted. Verify continuity of motor power cables and connector.
Motor winding shorted internally. Disconnect motor power cables form the motor. If
the motor is difficult to turn by hand, it must be
replaced.
The machine duty cycle requires an RMS current exceeding the continuous rating of the controller.
Change the command profile to reduce speed or increase time.
Operation above continuous power rating and/orproduct environmental rating.
Verify ambient temperature is not too high.
Operate within the continuous power rating.
Reduces acceleration rates. The Kinetix 300 drive has a short circuit overcurrent, or failed component.
Remove all power and motor connections and preform a continuity check form the DC bus to the U, V, and W motor outputs. If a continuity exists,
check for wire fibers between terminal or send drive in for repair.

Hi,

When I opened up my project I can see forces highlighted with Red. It shows Remove or Enable forces on it. Before I went to Mexico didn't noticed it, and I think someone changed something when I wasn't here. Can someone please tell me how can I find whether there is anything that is Forced in the program, so I can look what they used it for??? Please assist. Thank you very much.

Ethernet - SLC 5/05 vs ML1400

We are setting up a wireless (narrow band) Ethernet network with a SLC 5/05 PLC as the master that uses MSG blocks to read and write into remote PLCs. The remote sites with SLC's have a better time with the MSG's than sites with ML1400's. If you watch the PLC ladder where the MSG block are going to ML1400 site, it seems like there is a pause (2 to 3 sec) where the master is auto-negotiating the link with the ML1400. For the SLC sites, there is little or no pause. I did some research and it appears the SLC 5/05 was developed to use the CSP/PCCC protocol but later versions were developed to also be compatible with the EIP/PCCC protocol. Is there something that can be done to eliminate the "pause"? The MSG blocks for the ML1400 already have the multi-hop option turned on.

We are considering a test where we change the master PLC to a ML1400. Would the ML1400 PLC have a similar problem communicating with a SLC 5/05?

Another option would be splitting the master PLC duties by having two master PLCs, one a SLC and the other ML.

Rockwell Automation has not been much help with this problem.

Going Online RSLINX and RSlogix5000

Hi,

Forgive me, I am new with PLCs and have just now gotten RSLINX and RSLogix5000 to help me learn PLC Programming. I can't seem to go online in rslogix5000. I know I have to set up communication between RSLIX and Logix.

I went to whos who in RSLINX and I have Linx gateway, controlnet and AB_ETHIP-1, Ethernet.

when I select either one I still can't go online in logix.

I get a message when I try to go online:  failed to go online with the controller, RSLINX doesn't recognise the communication path. try checking the path by browsing in RSWho.

Anyone's help will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Download code to a PLC without RSLogix

Is it possible to download a project, or even just one function, to a ControlLogix or a CompactLogix PLC without opening the RSLogix software?

For example, by a command line or a small VB program

Studio 5000 no From Upload option

So my company recently purchased a new Allen Bradley PLC Demo kit from Amatrol (CompactLogix L16ER) and I installed the Studio 5000 v24 onto our company computer and started going through the Amatrol Lesson Plans. But then I had a bit of a snag. The lessons required that I open the files from the From Upload option on the Studio 5000 start up screen. Only, it wasn't there! There is no From Upload option on the start up screen. Anyone have any ideas how or why it's not there, and most importantly, how to get it there? It's kind of important!

Thanks!

Can't create a Runtime file in FT View Studio ME

I've just started having an issue creating a runtime application in Factory Talk View ME Studio. I tried downloading the latest V9 and still have the same issue. It says "unable to save tag database" and will not create a .mer file. I also cannot test the application. I've uninstalled V9 and re-installed it, also the same with RSLinx.

My communication path is good in both design and runtime.

I am unable to create a backup in the application manager, so I zipped the entire job file and sent to my reseller tech support. He was able to create a runtime application without issues.

I also cannot start a new project, add a button, and create a runtime...

Something is going on, but I am not sure what.

Any ideas?

FT View Site Edition v.8

I have been tasked with pointing our FT View application to a remote SQL server for all data logging.  I'm having some issues getting this to happen.  I've configured everything I can find in our test environment, but FT View still points to the local SQL Server instance.  There must be a setting I'm missing.

For instance, when i go to Tools -> Diagnostics Setup -> Destination Setup -> ODBC Database, and I point to the system DSN I've created pointing to the remote server (and even enter the correct remote credentials), when i create a table, it goes to the local sql server instance...

I've restarted multiple times.

Any direction would be appreciated.

Hi everyone,

Recently, I started working with the Micro820 Controller Embedded I/O. My project is simple : when the output _IO_EM_DO_00 is set to true, an LED light turns on. But, even though it's super simple, I can't make it work.

Here's my setup. If you need more information, feel free to ask anything !

Trying to communicate with powerfocus with generic Ethernet module

$

Hi everyone! So I am having trouble communicating with a power focus 4000 using a generic Ethernet module.

I am a contractor just integrating a companies tools into a build line so they have already set up the powerfocus with an IP address. I can ping that IP address if I connect the Ethernet cable going to the L73 control logix Ethernet card to my laptop.

When I set up the generic Ethernet module though, it always gives a communications timed out fault. I am guessing it is because I have the wrong assembly instances, but I am not certain.

i can't find any documentation in the powerfocus manual that says what I should put for the assembly instances for input, output, or configuration. I have tried some general ones (like 101, 102, 1) as well as some that I've used in the past for interfacing with power focus (100,150,5). But no matter what I try I can't get the plc to communicate with the power focus, even though I can ping it.

any ideas?
